Media Rights Agenda (MRA) has condemned the directive by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to telecommunication companies in Zamfara State.
NCC had, last week, ordered the telcos to shut down services in Zamfara, following the pervading insecurity in the state.
In a statement, yesterday, by its Communications Officer, Idowu Adewale, the group noted that the NCC, which is supposed to be a regulatory agency, had increasingly become a tool in the hands of the Federal Government for indiscriminate violation of the citizens’ rights.
Describing the directive as “unwarranted and unjustifiable interference with the rights to freedom of expression and access to information,” the group urged the NCC to reverse the decision immediately.
